January
01/01 New Year’s Day
06/01 Epiphany (El Día de Reyes): Celebrated on 6 January across Spain at Epiphany, this is the day on which gifts are exchanged to represent the giving of gifts from the Wise Men to the Baby Jesus. There are numerous parades, processions and events, including the lighting of bonfires in several towns.
February
Carnival: Celebrated in the towns across the islands, carnivals are held during the lead-up to Ash Wednesday, ending with the “Burial of the Sardine” (Entierro de la Sardina). On La Palma the main day is the Monday; Los Indianos! Video Los Indianos
Fiesta del Almendro en Flor: This festival is held in Puntagorda. It celebrates the blossom on the almond trees and the beginning of spring and includes folk dancing and the distribution of sweets and almonds.
March
Holy Week (Semana Santa): Celebrated the week before Easter, this festival features religious parades and gatherings in towns throughout Spain. A religious procession takes place on Good Friday.
May
01/05 Labour day
30/01 Día de Canarias: Celebrated on 30 May across the islands to commemorate the community’s autonomy from Spain.
June
Corpus Cristi: This festival is part of the religious calendar and is celebrated across the islands. Held in late May/early June, celebrations include processions and events.
San Antonio del Monte: An agricultural festival held in Garafia in La Palma, where local cattle are blessed and other farming techniques are showcased. It takes place annually on the nearest Saturday to 13 June.
July
Bajada de la Virgen de las Nievas: The major festival in La Palma is held every five years and celebrates the bringing down of the statue of the patron saint into the town. There are parades and processions as well as traditional music and dance events between June and August.
Nuestra Señora del Carmen: Celebrated in the second fortnight in July across the islands, this festival is held in honour of the patron saint of fishermen and includes many different types of events, performances and processions.
Jazz & Más: An annual jazz festival held across the Canary Islands featuring international musicians.
August

Fiestas de la Virgen de Candelaria: A festival celebrated in many places across the Canary Islands. Towns celebrate with masses, plays, floral offerings and musical events.
September
08/09 Fiestas del Diablo: An annual cultural event in Tijarafe, La Palma, where a person dresses as the Devil with fireworks over his body. Video Danza del Diablo
